You’ve heard and understood that work is not your family, but for my tender-hearted friends, I’d like to remind you that the company you work for is not even a person – it is merely a tax designation.
Meaning – when you purchase something for an event your company is having and don’t ask to be paid back, there is very literally no capacity for appreciation or gratitude from this inanimate intangible and imagined human construction.
Please understand fellow nice people, that I’m not saying your coworkers are not people deserving of respect, kindness and grace – but what I am saying is that in aggregate and as members under a greater corporate umbrella, the capacity for your kindness to be returned is close to nil.
So by all means, buy little gifts for your peers and take your boss to lunch as a personal friend – but you have to have realistic expectations.
The larger a body is, the more conservative it gets. So even if you’re doing amazing things in sales or rocking your success metrics, chances are the majority will vote against that raise you clearly deserve, and when they do – don’t be the underpaid fool who is also holding a bunch of receipts for office supplies.
